Supporting world-class e-Social Science
The National Strategic Director (NSD) for e-Social Science is a key strategic leadership role that will work to develop a coherent inter-agency approach drawing upon various national and international e-social science initiatives to maximise the uptake, use and impact of new e-technologies across the social science community. The post supports one of ESRC’s key strategic objectives to take a national lead in driving forward the development of cutting edge methodological tools, techniques and services to support world-class social science research.
Due to the strength of the NCeSS programme that has been so effectively set up by the hub team in Manchester, the UK holds an internationally leading position in e-Social Science. In order to maintain this position and to continue further engagement and adoption with the UK community, the NSD will build on the existing activities of the programme, to ensure delivery, and to broaden and deepen engagement.
A key resource in the development and delivery of this e-social science strategy will be the ESRC's £16.5m investment in e-social science. This has been primarily organised through the National Centre for e-Social Science (NCeSS) that has a major research programme consisting of a series of co-ordinated research 'nodes' located across the UK. http://www.ncess.ac.uk/ Director and Deputy Director will work with the nodes to develop a clear vision for delivering robust and sustainable tools and services for the social science community. They will also add value to the programme by developing synergies with other e-social science projects and programmes funded by national bodies such as the Joint Information Systems Committee (JISC) and other Research Councils, and internationally by engaging with emerging EU developments in e-social science and major programmes such as the US cyber-infrastructure initiative.
The National Strategic Director team consists of David De Roure of University of Southampton as Director with Marina Jirotka of the Oxford e-Research Centre as Deputy Director, Rob Procter from the Manchester eResearch Centre (MeRC) http://www.merc.ac.uk/ and Anne Trefethen from the Oxford e-Research Centre
