The Oxford e-Research Centre (The Centre) is a hub for multidisciplinary collaborations, supporting the use and development of innovative computational and information technology in both academic research and industrial applications. The Centre has a broad portfolio of research and development projects and receives research funding from all the UK research councils, JISC, industry and European Union. Its research activities cut across the sciences, social sciences, arts and humanities, engineering and medicine, and its core research expertise includes visualization and visual computing, e-infrastructure, high-performance computing, and web sciences. The Centre currently has some 50 staff members including over 40 researchers.

We are now seeking to employ an enthusiastic and knowledgeable IT professional to join the centre as Head of IT and to lead the design, deployment and support of IT Infrastructure that underpins the centres research activities.  This is in the first instance a 2 year post with a view that it will become an established position within the Centre.

The role will primarily be responsible for the design, delivery and support of IT infrastructure from virtual servers through to the desktop to ensure the Centre can deliver on its mission to lead digital research and drive innovation in technology.

The post holder will have responsibility for developing and managing all aspects of IT related infrastructure within the Centre. Working with research projects the post holder will lead on designing and ensuring suitable central IT Infrastructure is provisioned to meet the needs of the centre. This includes deploying and managing physical and virtual servers, and supporting the desktop and non-research server facilities for the Centre.  This will include aspects of user administration, hardware and software installation and support, maintenance and upgrades of all office system servers including web, email and storage and security.  He/she will also be concerned with the management of networking infrastructure within the Centre including wireless, backbone configuration and maintenance.  He/she will also advise on the long term planning of provision of the office and research systems within the e-Research Centre.  He/she will also manage the IT Support officer who provides additional day to day support to end users within the Centre under their guidance. Overall, the post holder will be the principal point of contact and knowledge for all IT related requirements of the centre. Working with projects that span multiple departments and multiple institutes nationally and internationally the post holder will also ensure external IT relationships are maintained, representing the centre as required.
