The fifth IEEE e-Science conference was held in Oxford, UK from Dec 9-11 2009. The meeting coincided with the UK e-Science All Hands Meeting that was held from Dec 7-9th, 2009.
Scientific research is increasingly carried out by communities of researchers that span disciplines, laboratories, organizations, and national boundaries.

The e-Science 2009 conference was designed to bring together leading international and interdisciplinary research communities, developers, and users of e-Science applications and enabling IT technologies. The conference served as a forum to present the results of the latest research and product/tool developments and to highlight related activities from around the world.

Building on the successes of previous meetings, we looked to develop some key themes at the conference.  These included:

1.      Arts, Humanities and e-Social Science
2.      Bioinformatics and Health
3.      Physical Sciences and Engineering
4.      Climate & Earth Sciences
5.      Research Tools, Workflow and systems
6.      Digital Repositories and Data Management
7.      eScience Practice and Education

There was also the opportunity to take part in a workshop programme that was focussed on newer and less well developed areas of research. e-Science 2009 also featured tutorials and exhibits.

As well as the vibrant research agenda the meeting offered the opportunity to meet socially with colleagues in the some of the UK’s most spectacular University venues.

We thank all of those who were able to join us for this event,

 Anne Trefethen (co-chair)

 Dave De Roure (co-chair)

 Paul Roe (Programme chair)

David Wallom (Programme co-chair)

Mark Baker (Workshop chair)
